Installing Helper Applications

The text of Acts and Proposals (see glossary for definitions) are currently being provided in pdf (Portable Document Format). You will need to download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader to be able to view them. This program is available from the vendor free of charge. Proposals may contain added text which is indicated by underscoring and deleted text which is indicated by strike through. Acts may contain partial vetoes by the governor. Partial vetoes are indicated by shaded text.

The current version of HTML (hypertext markup language) supports underscoring and strike through, but not all browsers recognize that markup. There are no browsers that support shaded text. Portable document format enables the Legislature to provide the most accurate information to the public. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we believe that accuracy is more important than convenience.

There are many different World Wide Web browsers in use. We cannot supply helper application instructions for all of them. Below are instructions for two of the most well known web browsers. If you are using a browser other than Netscape or Mosaic, it is likely that the installation procedure will be similar. If you are unable to install Adobe Acrobat as a helper application, you may instruct your browser to save the pdf file to disk and use Acrobat just as you would any other application program.

Netscape Installation Instructions

  1. Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader
  2. Start Netscape
  3. Select Options from the menu
  4. Select General Preferences from the submenu
  5. Click the 'Helpers' tab
  6. Set the MIME type to Application
  7. Set the MIME subtype to pdf
  8. Set the file extension to pdf
  9. You may key in the path to Acrobat or click the Browse button to set the path
  10. Click the OK button

Mosaic Installation Instructions

This is the easiest way to install Acrobat. This method assumes that there is not a helper application for application/pdf files installed.

  1. Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader
  2. Start Mosaic
  3. Download a pdf file
  4. Mosaic will tell you that the path to the helper is invalid. This makes sense since there is no helper yet installed. Click the Browse button and set the path to acroread.exe

Macintosh Note

We have no Macintoshes here at the legislature, so we are unable to provide step by step instructions. We have gotten feedback from Mac users though. Macintosh computers are case sensitive, be sure to use all lower case when specifying the Mime type, subtype, extensions etc. Do not use intital caps.
