Research and Information

The Research and Information Services section of the LRB responds to requests from legislators and from the public about legislation and government; provides assistance with legislative history and research; publishes informational reports about legislation and governmental issues with special emphasis on Wisconsin; prepares the Wisconsin Blue Book, the almanac of Wisconsin government; and assists with decennial redistricting.

Legislative Reference Bureau Service Policy:

The LRB's research staff primarily serves the Wisconsin Legislature but also provides a variety of information resources and services to facilitate public access to legislative information. Pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes s. 757.30 the research staff may not perform services that might constitute the unauthorized practice of law.

Answer questions regarding Wisconsin's legislative process. Assist in locating and using resources related to your legislative research topic. Assist in locating and using relevant websites, including the legislature's searchable infobase. Assist in locating and using legislative drafting records. Provide links to authoritative web-based resources on current legislative topics. Suggest appropriate government agencies or other organizations as sources of additional information. Direct you to resources that will help you learn how to do legislative research.	Give legal advice. Interpret the meaning of the Wisconsin Statutes or Administrative Code or determine their relevance to your specific situation. Determine legislative intent. Advise you of your legal rights. Recommend a course of action. Recommend a specific attorney to assist you.
