Ignition Interlock Devices |
Compiled by Eileen Snyder, March 2009 |
The number of traffic deaths involving drunk drivers decreased significantly between the 1980s and mid-1990s, but the decade since 1998 has seen almost no decline in fatalities. In an effort to reduce the number of drunk driving fatalities, antidrunk driving groups have begun supporting the use of ignition interlock devices, which require a driver to pass a breathalyzer before their car will start. Many states already require the devices for repeat drunk drivers, but recent efforts have focused on those convicted of their first drunk driving offense. Opponents consider the measures too restrictive, and not appropriate for first-time offenders. Proponents claim that they will save lives. This bibliography offers a list of resources about ignition interlock devices as well as some resources about drunk driving in general.
