REAL ID Background and Issues |
Compiled by Eileen Snyder, October 2006 |
On May 11, 2005, President Bush signed the "REAL ID Act of 2005" into law as part of a larger appropriations bill. It mandates federal standards for state driver's licensing by May 2008. Licenses from noncomplying states will not be accepted as identification for purposes of airline travel or entering federal buildings. The standards have not yet been issued, and state governments argue that the funding provided for the program is inadequate. These factors are causing states to fear that they will be unable to comply with REAL ID by the deadline. Meanwhile, advocates of the law claim that the act is vital to border security and the fight against terrorism.
