Biotechnology and the Ethics of Cloning: How Far Should We Go?  U.S. Congress House Committee on Science, Subcommittee on Technology, March 5, 1997. (No. 3) (347.122/X11) Includes testimony by a number of scientists from government, academia, and the private sector. Much of the discussion relates to the benefits of cloning species other than humans.

The Challenges of Human Cloning for Public Policy in Illinois. Institute of Government and Public Affairs, University of Illinois, 2001. (347.122/IL6) This legislatively mandated report examines the medical benefits of cloning research, the ethical and religious ramifications of cloning for reproduction, and the implications of creating unilateral state laws and regulations that are not adhered to by other states.

"The Cloning Controversy". Congressional Quarterly, Inc., CQ Researcher, May 9, 1997, v.7, no.18. (347.122/C761b) Written following the cloning of Dolly the sheep, this report offers a concise explanation of cloning in layperson's terms and outlines the federal response to this development.

"Embryo Research". Congressional Quarterly, Inc., CQ Researcher, December 17, 1999, v.9, no.47. (614.2/C761b) This thorough overview of the process and ramifications of embryonic stem cell research contains useful diagrams, sidebars, and numerous citations to related publications.

"Fetal Tissue Research". Congressional Quarterly, Inc., CQ Researcher, August 16, 1991, v.1, no.14. (614.2/C761) Though this is an older publication, the discussion of the ethical issues involved is still relevant and it provides good background information on the public policy debates surrounding this research.

Genetics Policy and Law: a Report for Policymakers. Lawrence O. Gostin, James G. Hodge Jr., and Cheye M. Calvo. National Conference of State Legislatures, 2001. (347.122/N21a) "A review and analysis of the development of state genetics policy to provide legislators and other policymakers with objective, comprehensive and scholarly information to facilitate drafting of sound genetics-related legislation."-back cover.

Genetics Policy Report: Reproductive Technologies. Edited by Alissa Johnson and Cheye Calvo. National Conference of State Legislatures, 2001. (347.122/N21b/pt.3) Summarizes federal and state regulations nationwide regarding research using human embryos and other innovations in reproductive technologies. The report also includes charts comparing laws on cloning and embryonic and fetal research among the states.

"Human Cloning". Congressional Digest Corporation, Congressional Digest, February 1998, v.77, no.2. (347.122/C762) In addition to presenting arguments both for and against cloning by a variety of experts, this issue of Congressional Digest contains excerpts from the congressional testimony of Ian Wilmut, creator of Dolly the sheep, and portions of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission report on cloning human beings.

Review of the President's Commission's Recommendations on Cloning. U.S. Congress House Committee on Science, Subcommittee on Technology, June 12, 1997. (No. 19) (347.122/X12) The hearing transcript contains the entire "Cloning Human Beings" report in addition to presenting testimony from the Chairman of the Genetics Subcommittee of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission.

Scientific Discoveries in Cloning: Challenges for Public Policy. U.S. Congress Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources, Subcommittee on Public Health and Safety, March 12, 1997. (347.122/X9) Contains testimony by several congressional members relating to a proposed ban on federal funding of research for human cloning. Includes testimony by several scientists interested in cloning research to assist organ transplantation.

"Stem Cell Research". Congressional Digest Corporation, Congressional Digest, October 2001, v.80, no.10. (614.2/C762) Presents pro and con arguments for stem cell research. It also includes a partial transcript of President Bush's August 2001 statement on stem cell research and a history of federal legislative action on this issue.

"[Stem Cell Research]". The Hastings Center Report, March 1999, v.29, no.2. (614.2/H27a) Articles evaluate the guidelines for stem cell research recommended by the Geron Corporation's Ethical Advisory Board.

Stem Cells: Scientific Progress and Future Research Directions. U.S. National Institutes of Health, 2001. (614.2/X5) "The report is a review of the state of the science of stem cell research as of June 17, 2001"-page i. GenInfo offers summaries and links to laws and legislation. GenBiblio is a searchable catalog of policy reports from various governments and organizations. GenConnect is a directory of related professional organizations.

This federal commission, authorized by the Clinton administration, produced several reports on cloning human beings, stem cell research, and the use of humans and human biological parts in research. "Cloning Human Beings" report available in the library (347.122/X13).

A compendium of online bibliographies, journal databases, a directory of genetics organizations, and a database of legal citations and resources comprise this information clearinghouse sponsored by Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of Ethics.

This central source for information on federal policy and guidelines concerning stem cell research includes the full registry of approved stem cell lines, transcripts of recent congressional testimony, and official statements from the Bush administration.

http://www.npr.org/archives/ - National Public Radio Archives. Search NPR's audio archives to find news stories, interviews, and call-in shows relating to stem cell research and cloning. Several hour-long programs are available from the shows "Talk of the Nation" and "Talk of the Nation-Science Friday". Entire segments can be listened to or downloaded online.
