District to Receive Brownfields Grants


MADISON -- State Senator Jon Erpenbach applauded Governor Doyle for his announcement that three grants would be awarded to 27th Senate District.

“I am happy that both Waunakee and Brodhead will be able to utilize this grant money for economic development projects,” said Erpenbach.

Waunakee Auto Body and Clemens Bus Company in the Village of Waunakee will receive $29,500 and $29,880 respectively in Brownfields Site Assessment Grants provided through the Department of Natural Resources.

According to the DNR, eligible local governmental units can be reimbursed up to 80 percent of the costs associated with assessing environmental contamination at brownfield sites.

Another grant has been awarded to the Brodhead Community Development Authority for the Walder Property Revedelopment. The Brodhead CDA will receive $79,300.

To be eligible for funding the applicant must be a local government unit such as a city, village, town, county, tribe, or redevelopment, community development, or housing authorities. The applicant cannot have caused the environmental contamination at the site. The party responsible for the environmental contamination must be unknown, unable to be located or financially unable to pay for grant activities.
